Abstract for Longworth’s Talk

L. Austin has been accused of endorsing a variety of epistemological theses, from contextualism (Travis) and naïve realism (Travis) to the denial of closure (Kaplan) and the idea that saying, “I know…” is a bit like promising (Lawlor). I discuss some recent attributions of epistemological views to Austin and raise questions about their fidelity. My aim is to suggest that Austin’s views about knowing may be both less familiar and more reasonable than some of the accusations make them out to be.
